5 things you should know about the Bushiri Scholarship – The Bushiri Scholarship, worth R2 million, attracts applicants from all over the world. For those who don’t know what the scholarship entails, here are five things you should know about it.

1) What is the Bushiri scholarship?

The scholarship is offered by Enlightened Christian Gathering Church (ECG) leader Pastor Alph Lukau and his wife, Pastor Tumi Lukau, to financially assist young students who are preparing for tertiary education. The scholarship was named after Bushiri’s biological mother, Sophia Magdalena Marushane (1957-2011), who died in a car accident. Applications were closed for 2016 and 2017. No applications have been opened for 2018 as of yet.

2) Who can apply?

The Bushiri Family and Friends Foundation runs a scholarship program each year in which they award out multiple scholarships across South Africa. The foundation is not limited to religious affiliation, and applications are open to anyone who meets their criteria. To be eligible for a scholarship, applicants must: Be between 16 and 25 years old; Have completed grade 12 or equivalent; Plan to study for an accredited full-time post-school qualification; And have been ordinarily resident in South Africa for at least 12 months prior to applying. This means that students from outside of South Africa are ineligible. Applicants will then be judged on a range of factors including academic merit, community involvement, career goals and financial need.

3) What’s it worth?

The N$100,000 that Ronny and Belinda promise they’ll give away as part of their lottery-like scholarship is a drop in the bucket when it comes to what most high school graduates will pay for university. Government loans will provide some assistance, but they only cover tuition and books—not living expenses. That’s why many students get summer jobs to try to save up enough money to make it through four years at school. But even with two jobs during both summers (and maybe a job during winter vacation), Ronny and Belinda would have made more than $25 per hour for all those hours! If you factor in inflation, that sum has probably doubled by now.

4) When does it happen?

June 2019 and October 2020. The exact date will be available when applications are opened. In line with the Church of Scientology’s global humanitarian programs, an international competition is held each year to select new leaders for Volunteer Ministers across five continents and 30 countries. A top university student from every continent – Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and South America – is selected to travel to Flag Land Base in Clearwater, Florida (USA) for training as a full-time Volunteer Minister.
