About the United States Institute of Peace(USIP)

The promotion of conflict prevention and resolution internationally is the responsibility of the United States Institute of Peace (USIP). USIP is an American federal organization that offers training in diplomacy, mediation, and other peace-building techniques as well as research, analysis, and training. It is headquartered in Washington, D.C.

A national “peace academy” had been proposed for years before the USIP was created in 1984 as a result of Congressional legislation that President Ronald Reagan had signed into law. The Institute is nonpartisan and independent, avoiding external interference. It’s only source of finance is through a congressional allocation.

With up to fifteen members, the Institute is governed by a bipartisan board of directors which must include the secretary of defense, the secretary of state, and the president of the National Defense University; who are appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate.
